The Great Gate Update

We moved in to our Harlingen home last year. Last summer to be precise. In the hottest month of the year, to be even more precise.

We love our new home, but it needed some love.

The landscaping was a mess. It was over grown, full of weeds, and had the dreaded mulch around the front of the house. I hate mulch. Mulch is the enemy if you love our home and don’t want it infested with cockroaches and termites.

We fixed all that, with some help.

We built a shop. That was a chore that required a whole lot more help. Reyn Builders built the shop for us and Dave’s Aluminum put up two huge extensions to help keep the sun out. A necessity here in Texas! We are immensely grateful to both companies.

With the shop up and filled with tools, it was time to fix more than just the landscaping. It was time to get serious. The front gate was first on the list.

When we first moved in, the front gate only opened halfway and didn’t latch properly. It was not square in its hole, either. (Hence the latching issue.) The hinge pinched and it only stayed closed if you locked the deadbolt. We wanted to fix it since we moved in, but had other priorities to check off first.

Nearly a year later, it’s fixed!

The front gate entered the shop a rusty, crusty, rotting thing that was failing to do its primary function—open and close.

The idea was to replace the rotted bottom rail, square it up, replace the hinges, and rehang it.

It was a more invasive surgery than was anticipated, but the final product proves it was well worth the extra effort.

That quickly turned into cutting it in half and replacing the entire bottom section and a small portion of the top bars, too.

After much measuring, cutting, welding, and grinding, a fresh coat of paint made it look brand new!

The CNC table made quick work of cutting out a W for that added personal touch.

BAM! New front gate. You can see the full slide show on the Projects page.
